Genesis - The Platinum Collection

Genesis - The Platinum Collection
Virgin Records
Out Now!

Their origins extend back to the late 1960s when two groups of boys from the prestigious Charterhouse school joined forces. Initially, the as yet unnamed group had no plans to tour the world and sell millions of records. Their intention was to write music for other artists. Certainly they didn’t imagine that, as Genesis, they would become one of the most successful UK rock acts of all time, achieving over 100 million sales worldwide, and that their international success would also launch several significant solo careers - notably Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel.

First, in 1999, there was Turn It On Again - The Hits. Then the seven CD boxed Archives sets in 2001 offering a wealth of previously unreleased material. Now Virgin Catalogue are proud to present the aptly titled Platinum Collection, a three CD set celebrating Genesis’ work over three decades.

It’s an impressive four-hour, 40 track trawl through the Genesis catalogue from Trespass (1970) to Calling All Stations (1997). And together with a companion DVD release Genesis - The Video Show, it makes an ideal gift for any self respecting prog rocker. The tracks have been selected by the band to create a nostalgic and comprehensive Genesis retrospective. Many of them have been newly remixed by Nick Davis at The Farm.

It includes The Knife, their first single on Charisma, and their first hit, I Know What I Like. You’ll also find the innovative 23-minute Supper’s Ready taken from the Foxtrot LP and selections from the seminal prog release The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, which exemplify the sound of Genesis when Gabriel was lead vocalist.

Naturally The Platinum Collection also features the hits Genesis are best remembered for such as Invisible Touch, Tonight Tonight Tonight, Turn It On Again and No Son Of Mine, which were released by the most successful Genesis unit of Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks.

Each disc covers a different era. Disc 3 from Trespass to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974), Disc 2 from A Trick Of The Tail (1976) to Abacab (1981), and Disc 1 from the Paperlate EP (1982) to Calling All Stations.

Coming at these in reverse order, Disc 3 is a real treat. Perhaps aficionados might suggest a tune or two that could have been included (Watcher Of The Skies perhaps?) but who can quibble with a track listing that includes The Knife, Musical Box, Suppers Ready, Firth Of Fourth, and The Carpet Crawlers to name but a handful. Commanding, sophisticated prog rock.

Disc 2 enters the post Gabriel years with Trick Of A Tale and works through Wind and Wuthering, And Then There Were Three..., Duke, and Abacab, by which time Phil Collins’ parallel solo career had really taken off and he was becoming the housewife’s crooner of choice. It includes Follow You Follow Me, Misunderstanding, Duchess, Behind The Lines, Turn It On Again, and Abacab.

Disc 1 enters the final chapter and the band’s most commercial phase which saw them conquer the globe, stadium by stadium. Alongside some of the previously mentioned chart-blazers - and let’s not forget about the likes of Land Of Confusion and That’s All - there are three tracks from their eponymous album - Home By The Sea, Second Home By The Sea and Illegal Alien, plus Paperlate and Calling All Stations.

So what we get here is an extremely comprehensive picture of the Genesis career with an average of three tracks taken from each album. It serves as an excellent reminder that Genesis were a wonderful progressive rock band that happened to hit upon commercial success as well. If you don’t have much Genesis in your collection, this one’s for you.
