D Debates the New Massive DVD

Talking about the DVD, how does it feel to have them all in one place as a body of work?

It’s cool. I’ve never even had more than four in one place on my shelf let alone on one DVD, so in that sense it’s good to have them all in one place. It feels like you can wrap it up and leave it in one place and leave it there knowing that it serves a purpose and move onto something else.

It’s not some precursor to a Greatest Hits or something then?

No, not to the bitter end anyway!

How comfortable are you about the inclusion of 'Angel'?

Now we’re totally comfortable with it because it’s a really great piece of work but at the time where we were at and in terms of what we were doing as a band and the feelings that were going on, you know the tension and all the other stuff that has been well documented, it didn’t work for us… the song was a bit of a non release for us and we weren’t sure about putting it out. It’s a very long and political story but, you know it’s nice having it there as a piece of work now and there was never any question about leaving it out.

Walter, from your point of view what was it like working with the guys?

It’s brilliant because they’re a band I always wanted to work with because for me, from my point of view they always set benchmarks in terms of videos and they were always the one band who have been groundbreaking. So for me it’s like… well, it’s as good as you get.

Obviously you’re making the new album at the moment, have you looked ahead and thought about any ideas for videos at all?

No, not really. Normally we work with people over three of four videos so it’s quite special, as opposed to having to start again every time. So from Walter’s point of view if we are going to present him some ideas we are going to want to play him a few tracks so he can get an idea of how the whole thing feels. I think once you’ve got a relationship with somebody and there’s a bit of trust it good to go to that person and say ‘look, check this out - have you got any ideas?’ I mean even today we have been talking about not doing it in the same format not putting videos out for MTV or TV but maybe doing something a bit more special and personal like shorts films or a film’s that’s connected by song. We might want to do something that you can serialise on the internet or something or broadcast in a certain way… there’s so many options really I think if you come away from the format that is generally recognised as the way to go. But obviously it’s quite scary because you can go in a lot of directions and there’s got to be a lot of discussion before you come to any conclusions.

And that can't be a bad thing...
