D Debates the New Massive DVD
Talking about the DVD, how does it feel to have them all in one place as a body of work?
Its cool. Ive never even had more than four in one place on my shelf let alone on one DVD, so in that sense its good to have them all in one place. It feels like you can wrap it up and leave it in one place and leave it there knowing that it serves a purpose and move onto something else.
Its not some precursor to a Greatest Hits or something then?
No, not to the bitter end anyway!
How comfortable are you about the inclusion of 'Angel'?
Now were totally comfortable with it because its a really great piece of work but at the time where we were at and in terms of what we were doing as a band and the feelings that were going on, you know the tension and all the other stuff that has been well documented, it didnt work for us
the song was a bit of a non release for us and we werent sure about putting it out. Its a very long and political story but, you know its nice having it there as a piece of work now and there was never any question about leaving it out.
Walter, from your point of view what was it like working with the guys?
Its brilliant because theyre a band I always wanted to work with because for me, from my point of view they always set benchmarks in terms of videos and they were always the one band who have been groundbreaking. So for me its like
well, its as good as you get.
Obviously youre making the new album at the moment, have you looked ahead and thought about any ideas for videos at all?
No, not really. Normally we work with people over three of four videos so its quite special, as opposed to having to start again every time. So from Walters point of view if we are going to present him some ideas we are going to want to play him a few tracks so he can get an idea of how the whole thing feels. I think once youve got a relationship with somebody and theres a bit of trust it good to go to that person and say look, check this out - have you got any ideas? I mean even today we have been talking about not doing it in the same format not putting videos out for MTV or TV but maybe doing something a bit more special and personal like shorts films or a films thats connected by song. We might want to do something that you can serialise on the internet or something or broadcast in a certain way
theres so many options really I think if you come away from the format that is generally recognised as the way to go. But obviously its quite scary because you can go in a lot of directions and theres got to be a lot of discussion before you come to any conclusions.
