Drew, the Singer-songwriter from The Island Comes up Trumps
For many artists getting signed is the major problem. Was it tough getting your contract?
No, I just signed May last year after I sent off a couple of songs and it's gone on from there. It was a bit unexpected and it's come around rather quickly, but it's been good.
I heard you've been working with Paul from the Bees?
Yeah, I wrote the album with him, just me and him. I go in with the songs, and he just puts bits on, drums or vocals. I recorded most of the album with him, he likes to use old equipment, he brings in old resolin mikes, from the sixties, which give it a nice sound. It's really the kind of sound I wanted, so I was pleased.
The songs are quite warm but simple, are you pleased with the way they've come out?
Yeah definitely, the songs are meant to be quite simple, with stock chords, they're just good general pop tunes I think.
How long have you been writing for?
Well I picked up the guitar quite late, seventeen or eighteen, I just really wanted to play songs on it. It was a bit later I started to try writing songs, about twenty, and it has only been in the last couple of years I 've started writing the couple that got me signed. So really I've been on and off trying for the last four years. Do you think you've got noticeably better at writting? At writing songs...yeah, not at playing guitar really, but writing songs is coming on a lot. I wrote a lot of stuff recently which I haven't got down at the moment. We've got to do four or five more songs for the album which I've finished, I just gotta record them now, which is good.
Do you find writing the songs takes time?
Well it's wierd, because writing really quick comes naturally to me. Writing "Under the Weather" took me under half an hour, and a lot of the other songs I write really quickly. It took a week from me writting "Under the Weather" to it being recorded.
When do you think the album will be released?
Well it was gonna be this summer, but now i think it's September time. There's a couple of EP's coming out, then the album. It's late summer I think.
What sort of gigs have you got lined up?
Well we've got a gig tonight! (Ed - Drew has recently just played Glastonbury too) |
