MY GOD "It's very much a road journey song. Literally its about leaving a place in a car and then thinking 'shit I'd rather stay with what I know, rather than go into something I don't know. The funny thing is that it's about coming back, rather than moving on. It's like checking to see if the grass is greener, but it really isn't."
LUCKY ONE "It's my favourite. It's literally about a bird. It's an imitation of a bird in flight. Its very much band driven, melody driven and not driven by me as a vocalist. It was written one time when I was on the telephone talking to a friend and I had the Discovery Channel on and this bird came on the screen. It seemed to pretend it was dead up in the sky, and it would just start falling. And just before it hit the ground it would swoop back up again. It was so lovely to watch that I just put down the phone, picked up the guitar and started building this thing around noise. I want to make a little film for this."
NIGHT ON MY SIDE "I'm not sure what this is about, nothing specific. It's an atmosphere. It's one of the first songs where I actually said something to conjure up an image. It's about a dreamlike state."
"The album is called "Night on My Side" because I reckon that's when magic is around, people start to talk, start to dream. It's a beautiful time. And a lot of these songs were written late at night. But it's the only time I can write anything good. Every time I try to write during the day the songs have this starchy feel to them, but night-time songs have more of a lazy calm."
